On January 10th of 2020, I boarded a plane and set sail for an amazing 10 day vacation on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii. After about 12 hours of flying and a lost luggage fiasco, I was able to step out of the airplane and into Hawaii's sunny January weather. The first few days of my trip were full of fun and adventure. We spent time exploring beaches and nearby towns. One of my favorite places to visit was Paia, a small surf town on the northern coast. While in Paia we visited its many small shops and restaurants. We ate at an adorable seafood restaurant called Surf Club Tacos and later moved onto a nearby restaurant called Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice where I tried shave ice for the first time. Because it happened to be whale season, sunsets along the beach or aboard a boat were filled with the incredible sights of whales surfacing on the horizon.
After a few days in Hawaii, it was time for us to attend a family wedding, which was the original purpose of the trip. The wedding was gorgeous and took place in an abandoned mill on the island. The days after the wedding, we did a bit more exploring. We spent time in a few small towns, visited farmers markets and juice stands, and ate at food trucks. I got to eat one of my favorite foods ever, poke, on the island that it originated from, which did NOT disappoint. During the last few days of our time on Maui, we went to one of the most memorable sights of the trip, the Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm. Not only did the lavender farm smell absolutely amazing, but its placement at the peak of one of Maui's mountains added a view that was not even comparable to any other spot on the island. The drive up the mountain may have been difficult, but it was nothing compared to the dangerous and bumpy journey that was the Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is one of Maui's most famous attractions. It is an extremely long, spiraling, swirly, bumpy, drive around the island with stopping points that are known as the most interesting and beautiful parts of Maui. Though it was long and difficult, the experience of driving around the island was made so much better by the waterfalls and beaches we saw along the way.
Boarding the plane to travel back to Miami was the hardest part of the trip considering I had seen so many beautiful places and things. The island of Maui has so much to admire like its cuisine, atmosphere, landscape, wildlife, and sunny weather. Although Maui will always hold a special place in my heart, I cannot wait to travel to the other islands and see what they have to offer. An amazing part of Hawaii that I feel is heavily under appreciated is its focus on environmentalism and caring for our planet. As you fly over the island you can see many windmills which are a renewable and environmentally friendly source of energy. While in Hawaii you notice that all shops and restaurants make an effort to reduce their use of plastic items and focus on using paper or recycled products. The care that the state of Hawaii takes in protecting its land and wildlife is definitely one of the reasons that I think their islands are some of the most beautiful travel destinations on Earth.
Enjoy some of the photos from my trip!
