Rating the It girls of The Beatles’ songs

As I have stated before, I am a big fan of The Beatles. Many of their songs are about both real and fictional women. Today, I am going to be rating some of the more popular Beatles women.

1. Michelle

“Michelle” of the Rubber Soul album is about a boy who has fallen in love with a foreign girl who cannot speak English. He still wants to communicate with her so he speaks in simple French by saying, “Michelle, ma belle, sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble” which translates to: Michelle, my beautiful, these are words that go together well. I feel like we do not get to really know Michelle throughout the song because she is portrayed through the perspective of the boy. Michelle is just an object; the way the boy describes her makes us think that she is simply there to complete the boy as all she does is be beautiful and not speak. Because of that, I am going to give her a 5/10.

1. Anna

From the album Please, Please Me, “Anna (Go to Him)” is a song about a girl dating a boy who she no longer loves. Anna finds someone else that she likes, but does not want to leave her current lover because she feels bad. The boy uses this song to tell her, “I will set you free, go to him.” I really like Anna because even though she found someone that she thinks she can truly love, she waits to break up with her current boyfriend to avoid cheating. The song is also one of my favorites, so the rating may be biased, but I am going to give Anna a 7/10.

1. Eleanor Rigby

“Eleanor Rigby” is probably one of the most popular songs from The White Album. The song follows the lives of a lonely girl and a priest, and how their paths cross. The song discusses Eleanor’s insignificant death and how the priest prepared for the funeral. The song poses the iconic line of, “all the lonely people, where do they all come from?” Elanor is one of the most complex female characters from all of The Beatles’ songs, and for that, I am going to give her a 9/10.
